Family Photography
Relaxed family sessions around Buffalo and Western New York — in a park, at home, or in the studio when the weather refuses to cooperate.
A family session should not feel like an appointment. The best ones look like an hour you would have spent together anyway — a walk somewhere green, a bit of messing about, someone being carried who is slightly too big to be carried — with the camera keeping out of the way until something worth keeping happens.
We photograph families across Buffalo and Western New York: new families, extended families, three generations in one frame, and the annual session that gets sent out at Christmas.
What a session actually looks like
We start with the picture you came for. The whole family, everyone looking, everyone in focus — that takes about four minutes near the beginning while nobody is tired yet, and then it is done and off your mind.
After that we mostly stop posing. We walk, we swap groupings, we get the children doing something rather than standing still. Along the way we cover the combinations most families want without making a production of it:
- The full group, posed and relaxed
- Parents together, without the children
- Each child on their own
- Siblings together
- Each parent with each child
- Grandparents with grandchildren, if they are joining
If there is a grouping that matters to you that is not on that list, tell us before the day and we will build it into the plan.
Where we shoot
Most family sessions happen outdoors. Parks give children room to move, which is half the battle, and Buffalo has plenty of good options depending on the season and how far you want to travel. We also shoot at home, which is underrated. A house full of the family’s actual things produces photographs that age better than a park does, and it removes the entire problem of getting small children into a car in good clothes.
In deep winter, or when the forecast collapses, the studio is the fallback. It is warm, it is controlled, and it does not care what the sky is doing.
Sessions with young children
If you have children under about six, the single most useful thing you can do is book around their nap rather than around the light. A well-rested toddler at ten in the morning will give you far more than an exhausted one at golden hour.

When to book
Autumn is the busiest season here by a wide margin, and the good weekends in late September and October go early — if you want Chestnut Ridge or Knox Farm with colour on the trees, book well ahead. Spring is quieter and just as good. Summer evenings are generous but run late, which matters with small children.
Winter is the season people write off and should not. Snow acts as an enormous reflector, the light stays soft all day, and a short session in the cold produces photographs that look like nowhere else.
If the weather turns: every outdoor session gets a backup agreed up front — either a covered spot, a move to the studio, or a reschedule at no cost. Rain is only a problem if nobody planned for it.
